Alpha Gamma History

Alpha Gamma Chapter was chartered on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on December 19, 1925, by five illustrious women: Clothilde Curry, Coral Johnson, Hilda Johnson. Juanita Rabouin, and Florence Russell. Alpha Gamma was the third chapter, undergraduate or graduate. to be chartered into the Fabulous Far Western Region under the leadership of Soror Naida McCullough, Far Western Regional Director 1925-1926.


Alpha Gamma's primary focus is to be supreme in service to all mankind while executing the sorority's current international program initiatives. Throughout its 93-year history, the chapter has always designed service projects to enhance the quality of life including collecting items for book, clothing. and canned food drives; serving food at The Midnight Mission and LA Mission: donating to various community-oriented organizations such as the Urban League, Jenessee Center for Battered Women. & the Salvation Army; and establishing various tutorial programs and workshops that educate and enrich the UCLA campus community.

The third Black Greek Letter Organization chartered at UCLA just six years after UCLA was established in 1919. Alpha Gamma's historic service through the decades included aiding WWII troops battling mail discrimination and inequality in the 1940° in addition to selling fried chicken dinners to fundraise and gather support for the purchase of Stevens House, a 22bed women's residence opened in 1948, for Ahran Americans and other minorities excluded from UCLA's only dorm and Westwood apartments. 960's service included community repair following the Watts Riots, fighting for civil rights, and saluting outgoing Supreme Basileus Julia Brogden Purnell (Cleveland Job Corps) as a host chapter at the And Boulé in Los Angeles in 1966. Participating in AIDS Walk Los Angeles, and hosting "Hey Sister! programs, a series designed to foster sisterhood and address issues specific to Black women, were fundamental in the 1990's. In the 2010's, Alpha Gamma established *Think Pink, Go Green Week," encourages environmental sustainability and ownership, a "Think HBCU" scholarship, and programs addressing mental health matters and women's health and wellness issues.


Alpha Gamma has been recognized as an exceptional undergraduate chapter by the sorority. On numerous occasions and recently in 2017, Alpha Gamma was awarded Far Western Region Undergraduate Chapter of the Year and continues to win numerous Ist place awards for chapter scrapbook and international programming initiatives. Chapter and individual recognition has also been given for highest overall grade point average within the region, most recently in 2018. The UCLA National Pan-Hellenic Council has selected Alpha Gamma as "Chapter of the Year," on several occasions also, and Alpha Gamma Chapter has received numerous community and civic awards for their service.


Notable members who helped establish Alpha Gamma as a premier undergraduate chapter include loane Braithwaite Burke, the first African American woman to represent the West Coast in the U.S.
House of Representatives from 1973-1979, and Los Angeles County Supervisor for 2nd District from 192208, and Diane E. Watson, U.S. Representative for California's 33rd Congressional District from
3032011, and niece to Charter Member Juanita Rabouin.
